Leona Mary Aschenbrener, 86, of Plattsmouth died Sunday, Aug. 10, 2008, in Omaha.
She was born July 21, 1922, in Mayberry to Everett Lester and Mary Anna (Bockerstette) Morehead.
On April 3, 1948, she married Frank Raymond Aschenbrener in Plattsmouth.
Leona was raised and schooled in Burchard, graduating from Burchard High School with the Class of 1940. She then worked at the Martin Bomber Plant at Offutt Air Force Base. During World War II she enlisted in the U.S. Women's Army Corps (WAC) and served from June 23, 1944 until being honorably discharged at Fort Des Moines, Iowa, Jan. 19, 1946, having earned the rank of sergeant. Leona returned to Plattsmouth and worked for the telephone company, Offutt Air Force Base personnel office. After marrying Frank Aschenbrener, they made their home in Plattsmouth where they raised their five children. Leona had worked at Cudahy Packing Company in the personnel office but retired in 1975 from Western Electric after 15 years of service. Leona was a wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker. She was a member of Church of the Holy Spirit and Lepert Wolfever VFW Post 2543 in Plattsmouth, and D.A.V.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Dale Sharp, Plattsmouth; sons and daughters-in-law, Joe and Pam Aschenbrener, Omaha; Jim and Trish Aschenbrener, Fort Collins, Colo.; Dave and Nancy Aschenbrener, Cheyenne, Wyo.; Steve Aschenbrener, Loveland, Colo.; 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Shirley and Ed Miller, Omaha; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Carl Morehead, Kenneth Morehead and Lloyd Morehead; and sister, Ethel Leaders.
Funeral Mass is 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 15, at Church of the Holy Spirit, Plattsmouth, with Monsignor Paul K. Witt and Father Paul York officiating; Laurie Hajek-Jones is organist and vocal music is provided by Terry Little, Karen Morehead and Angie Aschenbrener. Gift bearers are Alexsis Aschenbrener, Kris Constantino and Kacie Sharp.
Visitation: 1-5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, at Roby Funeral Home.
Rosary service followed by vigil: 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, at Church of the Holy Spirit.
Pallbearers: Andrew Aschenbrener, Chase Aschenbrener, Jacob Aschenbrener, Justin Aschenbrener, Michael Aschenbrener, Trevor Aschenbrener and Max Sharp.
Final resting place: Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Plattsmouth, with military rites performed by Offutt Air Force Base military rites team.
Memorials may be directed to Masses at Church of the Holy Spirit or St. John School, both of Plattsmouth.
