Changes in 2009 Karnival explained

“The more things change the more things stay the same,” the saying goes.

And when it comes to the 2009 Kass Kounty King Korn Karnival, the adage may ring true.

Although the Korn Klub made changes in the location of the Kornation and the time of the Grand Parade, the harvest celebration still offered tried and true events starting Sept. 10 with the crowning of the new Kornland King and Queen, Walter Oehlerking of rural Elmwood and Alicia Van Westen of Plattsmouth.

Moving the Kornation off Main Street and into St. John the Baptist School auditorium this year was a decision made based on the 2007 and 2008 celebrations, according to Karnival organizer Myrna Hale.

Last year, the Kornation was to be downtown, but heavy rainfall forced it inside Plattsmouth High School at the last minute.

“We were in contact with the weather bureau all day. They said the sky would be clear and nothing would start until after 10 p.m.,” Hale recalled. “It rained all day Thursday, so we took the chance the sky would clear. During the Royalty dinner, the sky opened up at 5:15 p.m. It pounded so hard on the Legion building we couldn’t hear ourselves talk.”

On short notice, the high school became available. “I can’t say enough praise for that school,” Hale said.

The rain continued Friday and the Kiddie Parade was cancelled. “We called off the parade at 11 a.m.,” Hale said.

The weather didn’t dampen the Koffee House at the library that night. “It had a huge attendance,” she said.

Although Saturday and Sunday remained rainy, the Grand Parade and Sunday activities carried on.

The weather in 2007 was even worse. “We had the Kornation outside and when the senior attendants, the dukes and dutchesses, were progressing down the carpet, there was lightening all around and it began to rain. They walked with water over their shoes,” Hale recalled. We continued the ceremony and the rain let up a little bit for the king and queen.”

A downpour, however, returned late Saturday afternoon, so the Grand Parade was cancelled.

“This is the rainy time of year for our county. Weather has been one of the contributing factors of the change,” Hale said.

Thursday night was clear as a bell and the Kornation at St. John’s drew 450 or more people. “There were 80-plus for the Royalty Dinner, and 250 on the bleachers for the ceremony. We had 150 chairs also set up, so that’s 480 not counting the participants,” Hale said.

Weather was not the only consideration made in the decision to change the Grand Parade to Saturday — tradition was also in the mix.

“We had a request from other participants and chose to go back to the original time for the Grand Parade,” Hale said. “In 1931, 1932, 1933 and 1934, every event was in the afternoon, because there were no (adequate) street lights.”

Moving the 2009 parade to the afternoon didn’t kill interest in it. “We had more entrants in the Grand Parade this year and more variety than in prior years,” Hale said. “We had between 6,000 and 7,000 in attendance.”

Sunday’s Fly-In drew its usual large crowd anxious to eat the breakfast prepared by Eagle Club members.

And despite the two changes, traditional activities including the 2009 Koffee House, Talent Show, Kiddie Parade, Little Miss and Little Masters Pageant, Quilt Show, Art Show, Flower Show, Slow Tractor Race, Show and Shine and Amusement rides still went on as well as many other events — all for free to local patrons.

The Karnival is not free for the Korn Klub. “The Karnival costs between $11,000 and $12,000 per year to put it on. We rely strictly on donations and vendors who come to Plattsmouth. Blues Amusements gives us a flat rate,” Hale explained.

With the economy in recession, donations were down this year.

“We understand when people came to us and said that sales were down,” Hale said. “All we asked this year was to have people assist us — line up the parade and guide people around town.”

Korn Klub members volunteer their time all year to set up the events and receive no recompense other than seeing people enjoy the festival each year, Hale said.

“The people who started this festival invited the farmers to come to town to celebrate the harvest. It was at the end of October. People came all week and stayed in the hotel,” Hale said.

Although the Karnival has retained most of the traditions starting 78 years ago, Hale reminds people that times have changed.

“When my kids got involved, there were hundreds of children who participated,” she said. “Now we compete with volleyball, softball and football. There are so many activities our young kids take part in. Also in the last four to five years, every community in Cass County has developed its own celebration, which I support.”

And yet, the Karnival survives.

“We love the pageantry. We love what’s going on,” Hale said.

Unfortunately this article it not entirely objective as the author is a member of the Korn Klub. From all I can gather, the Karnival is all but dead. They are nearly broke. They are out of ideas, and have a severe problem with change. The movement of the parade to the "traditional" time in the early afternoon helped to seal the fate of this tradition. This and many other decisions show just how out of step this event is with the times. Many citizens have to work on Saturday in these hard times, so my family and myself could not be downtown. But I learned from some who did get to go downtown to see it, the numbers of people who came to see the parade noted in the article are a bit obtimistic. I hope I put that nicely since those who told me this are pretty trustworthy. Come on Journal, get real, start reporting news instead of repeating the company line.

Speaking of changes to the event - let's change the name!

It isn't the '30's anymore. It is time to find a name that better represents the people of Plattsmouth and Cass County instead of a name that makes people think of intolerance and hatred.

I understand tradition and the heritage that it represents, the proud members of our community-past, present, and future. That being said, the naming of the carnival does invoke visions of intolerance to folks new to the area and our community-this happens regardless of intent and we need to understand this is the case. Perceptions are reality to those who perceive them. We have to understand and be willing to walk a mile in their shoes to provide the appropriate respect to those of the past, present and future.

The carnival this year was a big joke. The ride prices were outrageous, the parade was so short. Hardly any floats, no bands from other communites, etc. I decided to take my family to Worlds of Fun because they can ride all day for 25.00 this weekend. Alot cheaper than $4.00 to $5.00 a ride. So long KKKKK.

I do not know who counted the people downtown Saturday at the parade, but they must have been drinking, there was not 6,000 to 7,000 people there. More like 600 to 700. The parade was sad, only the Plattsmouth schools bands and the two paid performing groups from Omaha. Saturday night downtown was dead!!!

The numbe one thing that has to happen is to spell the name correctly. The name is a laughing stock every where but in town. Numerous people have come up to me and asked if I was going to the klan rally this weekend. The parade was terrible and why the Friday night parade, you know the one that focuses on AGRICULTURE, was cancelled is a slap in the face to the farming community that is a major part of the carnival. I dont know what parade Ms. Hale was watching but the number of entrants was pathetic. The "variety" Ms. Hale speaks of included 4 bands, 6 fire departments, local car dealerships, a few local businesses and a couple of churches....NOW THATS VARIETY!!!However, in her defense, I guess it would out number the parade from 2007 since that one was rained out. As for Ms Hale's estimate of 6,000-7,000 in attendance......maybe if you counted everyone twice. Its time to get younger blood involved with teh planning of the carnival before its too late, that is if this year did not kill it already. Finally, the corn club, Ms Hale specifically, needs to get the supporting businesses and agencies involved with the decision making. I know for a fact the police were never told of the road closures unitl they were approved by council. They were never even able to review them to make sure they were correct. There were other groups that had to completely rearrange their schedules because of the changes. Where was the firefighters competition that was doen last year?? I loved that and there was a large group of people that watched it along with me. It is my understanding they were not even asked to do it this year. TO THE CORN CLUB- LOSE THIS IT OUR WAY OR NO WAY MENTALITY AND ASK PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT TO SEE IN THE CARNIVAL YOU ARE KILLING IT.

The Cass County King Corn Carnival or KKKKK of old is a very unsettling name to a once very celebrated time in Plattsmouth's history. Plattsmouth is overdue to change this old way of spelling with the context of the K’s being of considerable question to all non locals. How about The Cass County Harvest Festival with an old time thrashing theme with events such as kids hay stack prize search, sack race (on carpet of straw), one day sand volleyball tournament setup on main street behind stage. Safe designed Hay-rack's transporting people from known advertised parking areas to the downtown area.
While the attendance in reality was down considerably with the Carnival's condensed version. Reality is that the KKKKK will need New Carnival Realm Board members who do not operate like some secret society to promote this yearly event.

Shawn, wait a minute. The annual fall celebration is called the King Korn Karnival and I'm the one who brought race into it? Try again. There is only one word in the title that should be spelled with a K. Seems to me the community is the one who brought race into it.

By the way - nobody uses the "full" name so trying to say it is the KKKKK is a joke.

It is time for Plattsmouth to move on from a name that brings to mind images of violence, hate, and intolerance to one that better represents the community.

You need to worry less about what it's called and look for leadership and solutions to make it the fun filled 3 days and 3 nights it was in the past instead of the farce it's become. It seems the days of parades with a dozen marching bands, the water fights, a home football game, etc. a fast fleeting. Get your acts together and save it while there is still something to save!

I would like to see most of the KKKKK stay the same. It is like going home once a year and times to reminisce.
The Saturday night parade was the highlight of the weekend, not only a fantastic parade, but meeting and seeing friends and family. Also,We are Cass County and need to honor all of Cass County, not just Plattsmouth. Farming, agriculture and rural life are vital parts of our county celebration.
The location of the Koronation was not good, outside would be the best choice
not a cramped gym.
The Koffee house is just a place to sit down, have a cup of free coffee and listen to a wantabe krooner.
Bring back Tradition before it all dies and is really just a memory for all of us that have lived here our entire lives.

What a JOKE…The kiddie parade, the price of the tickets for the rides, the price of the games, the grand parade. First off I believe it is time for residents of Cass County to be heard on things that they want to see during the Karnival. I really think with this economy that there are so many other things that families can do for the weekend that are cheaper and much more fun. It used to be every Friday afternoon my mom, sister and I would take all of our children to the parade, then do some rides and then enjoy the other festivities. My sister and mom still continue to waste their vacation time from work to attend, but I myself have chosen not to spend my vacation at this horrible event.

It used to be that carination would take place on Thursday evening on Main Street. It also used to be that the grand parade was Saturday evening not mid-day on Saturday. When it was in the evening it allowed families to enjoy the activities that were offered on Saturday afternoon then go home for a while and then come back for the grand parade. After the grand parade parents would then be able to take their kids to the rides and then enjoy some adult time at the beer garden. I really think that the Karnival is a total waste of time and people hard-earned money. I believe that there needs to be a town meeting so any and everyone is able to voice their thoughts and ideas instead of the same people running this for 30, 40, 50 years without good changes being made. The first place to start would be to change the name to Cass County King Corn Carnival, that way people would know that this is not a celebration of the KKK and that we actually know how to spell here in Plattsmouth…I will not be attending any of the Karnivals in the future until some MAJOR changes take place…

I think the public has spoken with their lack of attendance. Mrs. Hale has no idea how many attended from what I understand. Friends have told me it was in the hundreds and not thousands as it was claimed. The Korn Klub is no longer a grand thing to belong to but simply a club which is now a source of embarrassment to our community year after year. I have a teenage daughter and her and I both agree that the old man King and young girl Queen in this day and age is just wrong. It sends the wrong message. She wants nothing to do with it. There also hasn't been a new idea to keep the public interested and clearly the members of the club are hostile to any outsiders. So for my part I say give it up Korn Klub, you embarrass me, you embarrass my community it’s time to quit. Let’s rename the event, and get a bunch of new blood to organize it. I would rather have no Karnival at all than to have this continue like it is.

Carnival was terrible this year. Having the parade in the afternoon was a poor decision. And there were certainly not the thousands of people like Mrs. Hale said. Change the name of the carnival, have the parade at night like we have in the past, and EXTEND the parade route! There is no reason the parade can't go down Chicago ave. It would draw a much larger crowd. Typically after the parade is when the festival really gets fun... this year it absolutely died. What an embarassment. If things don't change next year, my family and many others that I've talked to will not be coming back.

As I read comments about the 2009 Karnival, it seems that what the event has done is possibly provided a means to revitalize the celebration for the future. The Korn Klub is far from a “Secret Society” as some have noted, the organization (non-profit) meets the last Wednesday of each Month at 7:30 P.M. at Plattsmouth’s City Hall. The meetings are always open to anyone in the community. For many years the Korn Klub has been accused of doing the same old thing year after year and never making any changes, in 2009 changes were made and now the concern is a loss of tradition. I hear a lot of banter about people wanting changes, but I never hear what type of changes you want, who is going to volunteer to manage them and how they are going to be paid for. This organization operates each year on a small grant for advertising, a small stipend from the carnival rides and donations, which have been decreasing for years. If you examine the current board of the Korn Klub you will find that it is made up of group of people ranging in age from 30-60 who give endless hours each year to try and host a fun event in Plattsmouth. Lets remember that each of us are human and that mistakes are made, but mudslinging and trash talk is certainly not going to make for any better Karnival in 2010. What we need is people with good ideas, a willingness to volunteer, and sound financial support from the entire community so that we can plan and implement a family oriented, and fun filled event in 2010. I invite everyone to attend the meeting on September 30th at 7:30 PM at City Hall where we will review the happenings of 2009 and discuss how we can make 2010 a better event. If you plan to attend remember that we will not get any where if all we do is play the blame game and fight, if you have a complaint then try to think of two things that you can do to make this event better, it does not do any good to raise voices and point fingers

See you on September 30th!

What about all the little kids that could not be there on Saturday because of soccer games and little league football games. If you look at the number of kids involved you will see why there were no parents and kids at the parade. Its sad, you are taking this tradition and carnival away from our kids. How many memories do people have of the good times and "class reunions"? Its priceless - Go back to the way it was don't ruin this for everyone!

Dear Supporter. I would attend if I thought it would do any good. I have no confidence that those who are running this event have the will to change it. It is not a blame game to hold those responsible accountable for their actions. I sometimes feel like we should all call upon the club to disband and lets get a new festival built on the ashes of the old one. Sometimes to get better, you just need to clean house.

What i dont get is why people want to mess with tradition? The carnival has had a saturday night parade for years, and as long as i can remember it was always enjoyable. I wasnt able to go last year or the year before but thot this year i could try and make it to the sat day parade. Like stated previously it was a joke. The saturday night parade was always packed there usually wasnt a place to sit unless you got there hour or so before it started. This year you could choose where you wanted to sit. There was just no one there def not 6-7 thousand maybe if you counted the total of all people for the whole weekend but def not on sat. It was just a waste of time i thought to even be down there on sat parade was about 50 mins long and mostly was fire and rescue vehicles and the band. Where was louisville, conestoga bands??? Barely any floats. Guarantee if it was at night next year youll see alot more attendance. I just dont understand why if something works people have to change it. What was wrong with it before being at night???

Supporter, I would be interested it helping with the festival if the name were changed, but until that happens I will withhold my support. I refuse to be a part of something that whether by accident or design promotes hate, intolerance, bigotry, and violence.

It is time for a change. How about the Cass County Corn Carnival?
Where Were The Bands

I spoke to both the Louisville and Conestoga band directors and there is a simple answer to this question. The afternoon parade was in direct conflict to both volleyball and softball tournaments at both schools that were scheduled well before the parade time was changed.

By the way, count me among those who think it is time to change the name.

I would like to thank the organizers for their hard work. Pleasing everyone is not possible. It takes quite a bit of money and time to coordinate something this big and I'd hate to see it disappear.

On Thursday night I took my girls down to Main Street looking for the coronation and found much to my dismay it was at St. Johns The Baptist elementary school. While that is a lovely auditorium, it just doesn't have the inclusive feeling on face value. I'd like to see the coronation move back to Main Street with a rain alternative inside, the choice of which is never going to be good for everyone. Too bad the community center doesn't have a nice hall for this sort of thing.

The grand parade in the afternoon excluded my family because of prior commitments. The night time is way better for us. Actually I wish they moved the whole carnival up to a date that didn't conflict with Nebraska football. I'll always - like quite a few men 18 to 80 years of age it seems - skip the parade for the football games. Just a reality check for the organizers.

The biggest let down about the daytime parade was the lack of entertainment on Main Street in the evening. We used to all hang around Main after the parades and hang out with people we haven't seen for years. Not this year.

And whomever thinks the beer garden is too much trouble needs to have their head examined. Not only did it add money to the athletic programs at the high school, it also gave people a reason to hang out after the kiddies wore out. The carnival was basically over at 10:30PM on Saturday night.

There is nothing wrong with the name. It was named that years ago for a good reason. I do feel that some changes should be made, so that it can better represent the white people of Nebraska. Let's say, for instance, the NSM were to attend next years Karnival, then you would have a GREAT event!

how sad to see a racist posting here. well, God will take care of you. for sure. not my place to. i looked up those initials and they are from a hate filled place.

my only comment is that i hear the Ks are gone and now it is the "plattsmouth fall festival" i sure wish it was the "cass county fall festival".

some good points were made here. the figures were certainly exaggerated as to attendance. but that is what committee folks do when they are losing control and have made bad decisions. very bad decisions.

now we will not be the laughing stock of the state. thanks for that one!!!
