Castaway Pointe riverboat restaurant for sale on Craig's list

You can get almost anything on Craig’s List, including a $375,000 riverboat/floating restaurant in Plattsmouth.

Castaway Pointe’s riverboat/restaurant is for sale on Craig’s List, which shipwrecks the idea of a new casual dining experience for Plattsmouth area residents.

"Unfortunately, we were unable to obtain zoning from the city to open the boat as a restaurant on a temporary basis this summer, and without a source of income it is uneconomical to keep her waiting for the development to fill," explained Thom Neese of Rensch Group NP Dodge in an email to The Journal. "We expect to work with the city in the future to develop a different and similarly unique and interesting restaurant bar and grill as demand allows."

Neese added that Castaway Pointe partners are still excited about the marina development’s future.

"We have enjoyed a great summer of happy homeowners enjoying life on the river at Castaway Pointe, many boating enthusiasts and are extremely excited to show off our new Cottage Resort development with homes starting around $150,000 in the spring," Neese writes.

Plattsmouth City Administrator Erv Portis agreed the marina property is very developable.

The city, however, is unable to grant "temporary zoning," because there is no such thing. "You don’t give temporary zoning," Portis said. "We’ve encouraged them all summer long to submit an application for zoning, so they could do a restaurant in compliance with the city ordinances."

No application was made, Portis said.

"Regarding zoning, how can we refuse to give them zoning when they have not made application for zoning changes?" he said.  "They have been told that to operate a restaurant they must submit an application to amend the Planned Unit Development, which includes paying their fees.  They have not yet done so. We can’t turn a blind eye to a non-conforming use."

Enforcing zoning regulations for some and not others is unfair. "If you go out and enforce zoning on someone else but not them, zoning becomes arbitrary," Portis said.

Although headway has been made on the infrastructure required for Castaway Pointe, a few details remain unfinished.

"The storm sewer to the marina is still left," Portis said. "The river level is too high, so they are searching for other ways to get that done. Testing of the water mains also remains to be done."

In the meantime, Jeff Haight, owner of Double Down Sports Bar and Grill in Plattsmouth, had arranged to operate the riverboat restaurant for two years.

When he learned about the riverboat’s listing on Craig’s List, Haight said he didn’t know what was going on.

"I knew nothing about this," he said.

I am not surprised at all about this. Plattsmouth can never get anything to develope...look at Wiles Crossing...still just a pile of dirt...Some things never change.

Why does this happen to Plattsmouth & Cass County? Cass Co and or Plattsmouth could have had Cabela's, an outdoor amphitheater, a WalMart, and Wiles Crossing. Is it all because of bad timing, or poor planning and a lack of support. A lack of patrons closed the bowling alley and the Hollywood diner. Are the people of Plattsmouth and Eastern Cass County so set in their ways to let this happen? Are we happy with giving our business to Sarpy CO and Omaha? How many businesses have failed in the building next to Pizza Hut? By my count at least 4, why? Is Plattsmouth doomed to be the community that people drive-by and be the focus of jokes (plattsmeth). Plattsmouth City leaders and the Cass County Commissioners are the people who are supposed to help plan for the future of this community. I want Cass Co to be known for something than having the "best farm-to-market gravel roads" and the meth capital of Nebraska.

This has nothing to do with Plattsmouth or our city government. It has to do with the Casteway Pointe owners and developers not following through with what they said. Hmmm wasn't this supposed to be up and running by now. Only 2 houses down there and one is a model home. This is a joke just like the big talk we heard on the bowling alley. Now all your bowlers are going out of town to spend their money and not in Plattsmouth because he shut it down in the middle of a season.

Add Castaway Pointe to the list of major developments that were going to benefit the city and failed to live up to the billing. The next one will be streetscape. Sidewalks and streets have nothing to do with determining where I make purchases. Price and selection do!

Castaway point is a big Joke. How much money do they own the city???? If they keep building up the land around the river when it floods the river will get into the water and sewer plants. Then what will everyone do.

I have been furious with the opportunities that this town has let slip through its fingers. This isn't just due to the "higher ups", it also has to do with residents not supporting the businesses that make it past development.

C'mon people, open your eyes and stop letting Nebraska City pass us by in terms of development. I wouldve loved shopping at Walmart in town, instead I still have to drive to Bellevue and boost their economy.

Bowling Alley, Teen Arcade, Video Stores, A&W, etc...all these places for our children and we just let them slip away.

I am so tired of hearing you people whine about not getting your Trashmart. There is one just 10 miles up the road. Having one in Plattsmouth would have killed the few businesses we have left. If you need hardware, go to Higgins on Main Street. You can't beat their customer service. Most of these people, like the group behind the bowling alley and Gilligan's Island (Castaway Point) just come to town to swindle the poor hayseeds out of their money. They have no real plan to finish what they start. Wake up and patronize the wonderful, though sparse, stores we do have.
